Published 15 October 2010 | By FIS

A software overhaul from FIS restores SBSA's former agility in a highly competitive market.

Standard Bank of South Africa (SBSA) Standard Bank Group is one of the big four full-service South African banks, offering a wide range of banking and related financial services. Standard Bank has 681 branches in South Africa and 332 in the rest of Africa.

Business objectives: SBSA partnered with FIS to help restore the bank's Base2000 software to its full potential. Base2000 is a sophisticated, mainframe-based card processing system used by major banks throughout the world.

FIS solution: FIS and SBSA implemented a new version of Base2000 and cleaned up over a million lines of customised code in a mere 13 months.

Benefits achieved:

  • Running Base 2000 to its full potential helped SBSA dramatically increase its profitability
  • FIS was able to customise Base2000 to SBSA's local needs without compromising the system’s effectiveness

Klaas Kruger, CIO for Cards, Standard Bank of South Africa, said: "Card processing is a fast, competitive business. Together, Base2000 and our partnership with FIS have helped us keep our reputation as South Africa's leading card issuer."
