Barclaycard Extends Contactless-enabled Cards To Other Cardholders

BBR Staff Writer Published 15 June 2009

Contactless credit cards allow secure payment for goods and services costing £10 and under, without the need to enter a PIN or signature.

Barclaycard, a payment provider in the UK, is increasing its release of contactless enabled cards to Barclaycard Gold and Classic cardholders. Customers, who receive a new, reissued or replacement Gold or Classic Barclaycard, will now receive one of the new innovative cards.

Contactless credit card technology, pioneered by Barclaycard in the UK, saves time when paying for items that people typically pay for in a rush, such as the morning coffee, lunchtime sandwich or newspaper and magazine. Contactless-enabled credit cards can be used at a number of outlets throughout the UK.

Amer Sajed, Managing Director UK Cards, Barclaycard, said: “In three years we will have an additional four million customers who will be able to make payments using their contactless card.”

Barclaycard currently has almost two million cards in circulation that can be used to make contactless payments. This includes Barclaycard OnePulse, Barclaycard Platinum, and Barclaycard Goldfish credit cards.

Barclaycard, part of Barclays Global and Retail Commercial Banking division, is a global payment business. It also issues credit and charge cards to corporate customers and the UK Government.
