Abbey apologizes for accidental overdraft cancellations

BBR Staff Writer Published 22 May 2006

UK bank Abbey has apologized to account holders who were charged after a computer glitch accidentally cancelled their overdrafts, according to a press report.

The bank failed to renew some customer's overdraft limits at the beginning of the month, leading to payments being cancelled and unauthorized overdraft fees being applied. The report, from thisismoney.co.uk, said that letters were sent to some customers warning of the GBP35 penalties charged for each time they went overdrawn. A spokeswoman said: We apologize for any inconvenience caused. Customers have now had their overdrafts reinstated and we will automatically refund those who were hit with charges. We will refund charges, but we also advise customers to keep an eye on their accounts and contact us immediately if there are any fees that should not be there.
